Types and Benefits of Massage Therapy

January is a busy month with getting the kids back to school and trying to get back into a routine after some time off.  Have you found yourself feeling overwhelmed as a result? Have you been feeling tired, sore, or achy?  If so, we have the perfect solution: massage!  Many folks use massage as part of their overall health care plan, and it has been shown to provide numerous health benefits.  If you are new to the idea of massage, let’s take a look at some of the most popular forms.

  • Swedish massage is the most common type of massage in the United States, and is also called massage therapy. Therapists use oil or lotion, as well as long smooth strokes, circular motions, and kneading.  It is a whole body massage that relaxes muscles and loosens stiff joints.
    .
  • Deep tissue massage is just that. It hits deep layers of muscle and connective tissue as the therapist works across the grain of the muscle using friction and slow strokes. While it is beneficial for chronic pain and recovery from injury, it is possible you will feel a bit sore for a day or two if you have never had this type of massage.
    .
  • Hot stone massage involves having heated stones placed on specific parts of the body. It helps warm and loosen tight muscles and is thought to balance energy centers in the body.  This is a good option for folks who are uncomfortable with the pressure used in other types of massage.
    .
  • Aromatherapy massage is traditional massage with the addition of one or more essential oils. Whether you are looking for energy, relaxation, or stress reduction, carefully selected essential oils can target your specific needs.  This type of massage improves circulation, relaxes muscles, and enhances mood.
    .
  • Shiatsu uses sequential, rhythmic, localized finger pressure on acupuncture meridians. This improves the flow of energy in your body and helps restore balance.  The pressure is not deep, and there is typically no discomfort.
    .
  • Craniosacral therapy involves the use of light pressure and gentle manipulation to move the fluid within the craniosacral system. This helps unblock problem areas and enhance the body’s natural balance and energy flow.  It can help with chronic pain, headaches, and injury to the body.
    .
  • HydroMassage is the use of a twin size water bed that sends heated, pulsing jets of water across your entire body. You remain fully clothed and can control the pressure, speed, and even note specific areas on your body for enhanced massage.

No matter which type of massage you choose, there are lots of benefits. Here are eight of our favorites:

  • Reduces stress and anxiety by putting you in a calm, relaxed frame of mind.
  • Lowers blood pressure, and slows down heart rate.
  • Slows down rate of breathing and maximizes oxygen flow.
  • Reduces chronic pain and sore muscles.
  • Increases blood circulation throughout your body.
  • Promotes a feeling of relaxation and peace.
  • Calms the nervous system.
  • Leads to better sleep at night.

If any of those things sound good to you, a massage may be just what you need!  It is an excellent way to practice self-care, and will leave you feeling grounded and relaxed.  If you are new to massage or haven’t been in a while, we’d like to offer you a chance to get in the massage groove with a HydroMassage at Simple Health.
