9 Ways to Find Your Balance this Spring

The upcoming vernal equinox kicks off the first day of spring on March 20th.  When the equinox occurs, the planet has leveled out on its axis and there is approximate equality between daytime and nighttime.  With this balance, and earth will begin tilting more toward the sun, resulting in increased daylight, warmer temperatures, and the thawing out we have all been waiting for.

The idea of the earth’s balance is a good example for us.  Have we leveled out, are we leaning more toward the sun and experiencing the same warmth and renewal, or are we headed in the other direction?  Are we feeling hopeful about the change in season and the possibilities of rebirth, or are we feeling isolated and off track?

We all experience setbacks in our lives and journeys toward wellness.  That is part of the bigger picture of change.  And, it is okay.  Often times we learn the greatest lessons from our falls and failures.  The important thing is to always get back up and try again.

Here are some reminders to help you find your own balance this spring so you can enjoy the rewards of change:

Eat

  • Remember to eat a wide variety of veggies, lean animal protein, and to choose foods closest to their natural form.
  • Eat complex carbohydrates rather than simple starches. Whole grains and foods high in fiber are good choices.
  • Avoid processed foods that are high in fat, sugar, and salt.

Drink

  • Shoot for at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day or half of your body weight in ounces. Good hydration flushes out the system and provides balance to our bodies.
  • Limit alcohol, caffeine, and sugar filled drinks.
  • Pull out your blender and make some healthy smoothies as a way to creatively maximize your veggie and fruit intake. There are lots of recipe ideas online, but be sure to choose the ones without added sugar or syrups.

Be Merry

  • Surround yourself with people who support you and lift your spirits. Nothing drains energy like being around negative people and situations.
  • Take time for yourself to rest, relax, and enjoy the things you like to do.
  • Exercise regularly for your health and mood. Shoot for at least 20 minutes per day, at least a few times each week.

While the warmer temperatures and extra daylight are great incentives to get outside

and reconnect with others, remember to get enough sleep.  Most of us need a solid 6-8 hours per night.  Make sure your bedroom is dark, quiet, cool, and peaceful.  Getting enough sleep is crucial to maintaining energy and focus throughout the day, and sleep allows our bodies to heal and rejuvenate.

Keep up the great work you are doing!  Health and change are a process, and you are right where you are supposed to be right now.
