Did you know, according to the CDC in 2020, that approximately 34.2 million Americans – just over 1 in 10 – have been diagnosed with diabetes and 88 million adults – approximately 1 in 3 – have prediabetes. Wow!!! What does this mean for the future of our health? How can we begin to understand and make changes to remain healthy moving forward?
Let’s take a minute to talk about the typical American diet and what it is doing to our bodies. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Americans now consume an average of 156 pounds of added sugar per year. According to a trade group of sugar manufacturers called The Sugar Association, only about 29 pounds of that comes in the form of sugar added in our morning coffee. The remaining 127 pounds of the sweet stuff comes from foods including candy, soda, and junk food. Added sugar can also hide in foods such as crackers, bread, yogurt, peanut butter, ketchup and other condiments.
The World Health Organization recommends that we eat no more than 6 tsp, or 25g of sugar per day. Keep in mind that one (1) 12 oz regular soda contains 8 tsp of sugar. Based on the sugar intake of the average American, we are consuming 193g of sugar per day. That is almost 8 times the recommended sugar intake.
Getting your blood sugar in check would be a great start to not fit into the health statistics of diabetes. Don’t be part of the healthcare crisis we are seeing today!!
