Antioxidants are such an important part of your diet today. Your body requires oxygen to live. Your body would shut down without oxygen. However, the oxygen molecule you need for living is also turned into particles that can cause destruction within the body. This damage can cause various diseases and creates the changes we associate with aging.
If the oxygen molecule loses an electron, it becomes unstable and destructive. This unstable molecule is termed a ‘free radical’. Oxidation is when an oxygen free radical attacks a stable molecule. These free radicals can damage any tissue, organ, fat protein or carbohydrate molecules in the body. Our body has a natural defense mechanism against free radical damage and this is called an antioxidant. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals.
Antioxidants are in Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Vitamin A (beta-carotene), selenium, zinc and manganese. Phytochemicals in plants can also act as antioxidants. Protect yourself from oxidation by eating a diet high in plant foods including vegetables, fruits, legumes and nuts. The coined term you frequently hear today is to eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables. When choosing colors for the greatest antioxidant benefit in fruits and vegetables think blue/purple, green, red and yellow/orange. Eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. This type of eating will assist in protecting you from certain diseases and will help the aging process. Choose health today!
